Counter trafficking in BiH– Regional SIDA Project

Trafficking in human beings has increased in scope in recent years and has become a challenge demanding a strong, comprehensive and coherent response from the governments and the international community at large. Trafficking in persons, especially in women and children is a distinctive and highly sobering form of the wider phenomenon of trafficking in migrants and irregular migration.

Since May 2001 Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) has funded direct assistance projects for victims of trafficking, in particular women and children stranded in the Balkan countries. This project will continue to facilitate direct assistance to victims of trafficking in and from the region.

THE PROJECT

By building upon and complementing IOM’s past and present activities in the region, this project will continue to facilitate the orderly, safe and dignified return and reintegration of trafficked persons from/through/to Albania, Bosnia Herzegovina (BiH), Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo (Serbia Montenegro), Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia Montenegro and Ukraine but also for victims of trafficking from the Balkans coming back from other countries (reintegration) as well as internal victims of trafficking (reintegration). The project will also strengthen capacities of local NGOs providing direct assistance to the victims of Trafficking in human beings.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of this project is to facilitate the return and reintegration of victims of trafficking from/through/to Albania, BiH, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo (Serbia Montenegro), Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia Montenegro and Ukraine, primarily women and children, in co-operation with other international organisations, local and international NGOs and Government authorities.  The second purpose is to strengthen capacities of local NGOs providing direct assistance to the victims of Trafficking in human beings.
